If you’re planning to spend Thanksgiving weekend in the Nisswa Lakes Area, you’re in for more than just turkey and football — you’re in for a full weekend of small-town charm, holiday lights, and local fun.

Don’t forget to check out our Weekend Roll Call — a weekly roundup of everything happening around the Nisswa and Brainerd Lakes Area. From live music and special events to local food and shopping highlights, it’s the best way to plan your weekend in one spot.

Now, here are ten reasons why Nisswa should be at the top of your Thanksgiving list this year:

1. Nisswa City of Lights

If you know, you know — and if you don’t, you’re in for something special. The Nisswa City of Lights Celebration 2025 hosted by the Nisswa Chamber takes over Downtown Nisswa on Friday, November 28, 2025, lighting up the streets with holiday magic, fireworks, train rides, carolers, bonfires, and that Hallmark-movie-town kind of feel. It’s one of those nights that reminds you why we all love it here.

2. Skip the Cooking, Keep the Memories

Leave the cooking to the pros this year. Local restaurants across the Lakes Area offer dine-in and take-bake Thanksgiving dinners so you can relax and enjoy time with family instead of managing oven timers.

Check out our Thanksgiving Dining & Take-Out Guide for all the details.

Camp Nisswa pick: Sunshine’s Summerhouse Smoked Turkey Dinner — it’s easy, delicious, and feeds a crew. Order by Friday, November 21 and pick up Wednesday, November 26 (2–9 PM).

3. Shop Local and Find One-of-a-Kind Gifts

After the feast, it’s time to stroll downtown and support the small shops that make Nisswa special. From hand-crafted gifts to cozy hoodies, you’ll find something for everyone on your list.Hint hint — Camp Nisswa gear makes a great gift, and you can only get it locally at Northern Gifts & Sweets in Downtown Nisswa.

4. Christmas Acres at Copper Creek

Bring the family and wander through the festive glow of Christmas Acres at Copper Creek Garden Center. Opening November 28, the property transforms into a twinkling holiday wonderland filled with trees, lights, and plenty of Christmas spirit. It’s the perfect way to kick off the season. 5. Sertoma Winter Wonderland at Northland Arboretum

A true Brainerd Lakes classic. Sertoma Winter Wonderland opens Thanksgiving night, November 27, 2025, at the Northland Arboretum and runs Thursdays through Saturdays until Christmas — and nightly from Christmas Eve through New Year’s Eve.With over 80 lighted and animated displays, it’s a drive-through holiday experience that’s been bringing joy to families since 2007.

See our recap from 2023 for a glimpse of what’s in store.

6. Raise a Glass (or Pint)

After the turkey and lights, unwind with a local craft beer. The Nisswa Lakes Area is home to some of the best breweries in Minnesota. Be sure to swing into Big Axe Brewing Co. to try the Camp Nisswa Cream Ale — our signature collaboration.

Check out our Brewery Guide for more great local stops.

7. Catch Some Live Music

Nothing beats the live music scene around here. Every weekend, venues across the Lakes Area are packed with talented artists and good vibes. Find out who’s playing where in our Weekly Live Music Guide — updated often so you don’t miss a beat.

8. Try Your Luck at a Meat Raffle

10. Stay a Little Longer

There’s plenty of room for everyone — from lakeside resorts to cozy cabins to charming Airbnbs. Or maybe just your friend’s house for a laid-back Friendsgiving. However you spend it, we hope your Thanksgiving weekend is full of laughter, warmth, and Nisswa magic.
