This past weekend we spent our Saturday afternoon out at the Northland Arboretum, checking out their new Forest Ice Skating Trail — and it was one of those winter experiences that just felt right.

From the moment we stepped onto the trail, it was clear this was something special. Families, kids, couples, and familiar faces were all out enjoying the afternoon. Some people were confidently skating along, others were taking their time and learning as they went — but everyone had a smile. It felt relaxed, welcoming, and very much about being outside together.

Forest Ice Skating: A Unique Winter Experience

This is the Arboretum’s first-ever season offering Forest Ice Skating, and it’s already easy to see why it’s getting so much attention. The ice trail winds through the woods, stretching between a quarter-mile and a half-mile, with gentle curves and light elevation changes that make it feel more like a journey than a traditional rink.

You’re not skating in circles here. You’re gliding through trees, surrounded by snow, winter light, and quiet moments — the kind of setting that makes you slow down and enjoy where you are.

Because this is a natural ice trail, skaters should expect some variation in the surface. That’s part of what makes the experience unique. Helmets are encouraged, especially for younger skaters.

Who It’s Best For (EVERYONE!)

One of the best parts about this trail is how approachable it is. This experience is a great fit for families, casual skaters, kids learning to skate, and anyone looking to enjoy winter at their own pace. You don’t need to be an experienced skater — just bundle up, lace up, and enjoy the afternoon.

How It Works

Bring your own skates and head out on the trail, or use on-site rentals if available. The trail is designed to be enjoyed by all ages and experience levels, making it an easy way to get outside and stay active during the winter months.

Skate Rentals + How You Can Help

The Arboretum offers limited skate rentals, available on a first-come, first-served basis. The skates currently in rotation have been generously donated by members of the community.

They’re currently well stocked on women’s sizes, but they could really use:

  • Kids’ skates

  • Men’s skates (especially larger sizes)

If you have skates at home that aren’t getting used, consider donating them. Every pair helps make skating more accessible and supports this growing winter program.

Even More Winter Fun at the Arboretum

Ice skating is just one of many winter activities available at Northland Arboretum:

  • Cross-Country Ski Trails

    • 15 kilometers of groomed trails maintained by the Brainerd Nordic Ski Club, including 6 kilometers of lit trails open nightly from 4:30–10:00 PM. Trails are groomed for both classic and skate skiing.

    • Note: Skiers age 16+ need a Great Minnesota Ski Pass. Daily passes are available at the Visitor Center, and current conditions can be found on skinnyski.com.

  • Snowshoe Trails

    • Over two miles of marked snowshoe trails winding through prairie restoration areas and the Jack Pine Savannah.

  • Snowshoe Rentals

    • Available at the Visitor Center for both kids and adults, valid for three hours.

  • Sledding Hill

    • Located next to the nature playscape and lit until 10:00 PM in the evenings, making it a great option for younger ages.

Know Before You Go

  • Bring your own skates if you have them

  • Helmets encouraged, especially for kids

  • Natural ice means some surface variation

  • Trails are open during daylight hours

  • Dress warm and take your time out there

Check Ice Conditions Before You Go

As with any outdoor winter activity, conditions can change. For the latest updates on ice conditions, trail status, or weather-related closures, be sure to check the Northland Arboretum’s Facebook page or give them a quick call before heading out — especially during warmer stretches or after fresh snowfall.

A Big Thank You

A big thank you to the Northland Arboretum staff and volunteers for creating such a thoughtful and fun winter experience. This trail is a great example of how winter in the Lakes Area can be enjoyed — simple, welcoming, and centered around community.

If you haven’t been out yet, this one is worth adding to your winter list.
